Helium Balloons

As any kid will tell you, helium balloons are the balloons of choice for most occasions. Their ability to float high above the heads of party guests has been a point of fascination for children since they were first invented. This is why they have been a staple of kid’s parties for decades.

Helium balloons “float” because of their adherence to the law of buoyancy. Helium is lighter than air, and as such as the helium replaces the heavier oxygen inside the balloon, the natural tendency is for it to rise and float. This action is similar to that which happens when you take a ball full of air underwater.

Helium balloons can be made from either latex or Mylar. Both materials are non-porous, meaning that the helium inside cannot escape, at least not very rapidly. However, a helium tank will be needed to fill these balloons, and can be found at most party supply stores.
